Emjoi Epi Slim Cosmetic Hair Remover (Epilator)

So today, we're going to talk about armpits. That's right, this will be a review of an epilator I recently tried. Now, I'm usually a fan of waxing or plucking underarm hair but there are two problems with that: time and money. Depending on the rate of hair growth, one would need more waxing appointments, which on average cost about $10 near where I am. This can add up very quickly so of course you then venture out to pluck them yourself. This is great, but it takes a lot of time and patience (also a lot of neck pain afterwards). So I got lazy and decided to try out an epilator. An epilator is basically a tool that does the plucking for you, electronically. They come in a range of sizes, battery operated or rechargeable. I still wasn't too sure on how this would work for me so I decided to test out a cheaper and smaller version. I chose a smaller sized one in hopes that the level of pain would be reduced, but also keep in mind that might take longer to get every hair out. I read some reviews and they were pretty mixed on the how painful it actually is since everyone has a different level of tolerance. But if you are accustomed to waxing and plucking anyway, this shouldn't be any more painful. After a while your endorphins kick in and it's all swell. =) Alright, so enough of all these words on the screen, let's see some pictures!

This is the Emjoi Epi Slim. Can be purchased from Amazon or Target. They run from $15- $20.

These are not blades. When it spins, the metal plates come together pulling the hair out.

Requires 2 AA batteries.

And it comes with a tiny brush to sweep out the hairs stuck between the plates. Cleaning it is essential because it causes the gap to be smaller, effectively pulling out the hair.

Verdict: Will definitely by again!

Epilators aren't as scary anymore and I might even venture out and try out the larger version of this, as this is meant for travelling. On the instructions, they suggest that you use this in a circular motion to reduce the amount of tension in one area so less pain is felt. However, I find that even without using it in a circular motion, it is still virtually pain free. It's more of a shocking sensation that you feel initially, but after the first 10 seconds, it's nothing much. They also advertise that it's effective in removing hair from the bikini area, I would think that it definitely will be more painful. I personally did not try it so I cannot speak for it's effectiveness. But for the underarms, this is something that I highly suggest you ladies try.

Side Question: Any of you ladies have a remedy for insect bites? I'm not even sure if it was mosquito that bit me, but I was bitten 4 times on my foot! Now it's red and swollen- so gross. Please let me know what you use to aid in the healing process. :)

omg, I have the same problem with the insect bite on one of my foot! I have no idea why and it's so pink! I don't know if it's a mosquito bite or not either =T It's been there for at least 4 days now -___-'

I've noticed a lot of people are starting to use it now! I either shave or pluck my underarms. I tried waxing myself but it wasn't successful. Ohhh, and the neck pain when plucking your underarms for so long... it definitely sucks! Thanks for the review =] I can probably tolerate it. I was looking at the purple one but not sure yet. It's just tempting me to buy it more and more as more reviews are showing up. I agree, the bikini area is probably the most hurtful place to even tweeze so I would want something that is fast and powerful so the pain isn't LONGG. hehe.

Hi Diana,

Great review!! I'm going to try the epilator. I usually pluck the hairs out as well and it IS time consuming and neck straining :p Aye!

For insect bites, I usually will buy a topical cream. At Target, they have a generic brand called Up & Up antibiotic ointment. That usually works great and it's over the counter. It's in a white tube with purple words. Similar to the brand Neosporin. If it's really bad, you should have a physician check it out :( They will probably prescribe you Triamcinolone Acetonide. It's a little stronger but is also an antibiotic.

For natural remedies, drink tons of water and apply aloe on the bites. I hope this will help!

OoOoOO... this sounds amazing. I was actually thinking about looking for a way to get rid of armpit hair. I hate plucking them all the time. I know exactly what you mean about neck pains. {*HAHA} And my eyes kind of hurt after awhile as well. I was thinking about getting an epilator to remove my leg hairs.

As for bug bites... I'm not too sure what to say. =/ I usually don't itch the bites and they go away.

I saw your tweet about how you've been too busy to blog. Don't worry about it. We will always be here. =] I'm on the same boat as you. Work has been taking up ALOT of my time and when I'm not working I just want to go out and have fun. Today is probably one of the first Saturday's I've been home relaxing and blogging since I started working. When you have the time, you'll have the time. You are missed though. ^.^

Hi Diana!
Gosh, I'm sorry to hear about the insect bite on your foot. I usually don't do anything about insect bites and I've been lucky this past summer- I don't think I even got one bite. I see Afterbite being sold in stores for that kind of thing but I haven't tried it...
That's great that the epilator works for you! You're right, it will save time. I did try to use an epilator once but when I looked at the razor part, I got scared and asked my younger sister to give it a go. She looked at it and got scared too LOL. We spent like half an hour trying to coax one another into using it first. So silly!

I've wanted an epilator for a while now since pursebuzz on youtube raved about it! I hate my fast growing dark armpit hair! I've been shaving just because its quick and easy but it grows back so fast! Waxing also works really well and usually hair doesn't grow back until a week later and it grows back super thin too! Need to invest in an epilator soontime! :)

ooh thanks for sharing! i have always wondered about the pain level of different epilators and wanted to try one

the epilator looks really cool! and $15-$20 is really cheap considering that you don't need to repurchase!

the camera i'm using is samsung es55. its pretty much a regular camera =T in good lighting the pictures are pretty good but in normal lighting the pictures are blah and it takes a lot of work in photoshop to get them to look good =_= i slightly photoshop all my pictures (its my hobby, lol).

i heard that mint toothpaste helps? because it cools the bite?

I have that exact epilator. I bought it a few years ago on Amazon.
I really don't like it. It doesn't work very well for me. If you're going to use it for armpits, you have to wait until the hair is substantially long enough before it can pull them out. I tried it on my arm hairs and it works just okay on my arms. Although, I do have really thin, fine arm hairs. Still, I have to run it back and forth a good number of times before it even takes off most of the hair.

Hi! I have a Phillips epilator and I gave up becuase I am a wimpy girl! I wish I kept at it though... I hate that 'shadow' that forms under the skin... grrrr.

My nails are Artificial nails, I apply them myself. They are paint-able, and I can use non acetone polish remover to change my polish.

Keeping my hands lovely and avoiding dry cuticles ,prevention is the way to go.

You have a lovely blog, I will be reading through it..... soon.
